The Villalba private clinic is at the forefront of mini-invasive surgery in the genitourinary tract. Surgery is carried out by highly experienced experts using the latest laser technology, yielding effective results in the treatments of stones, hypertrophy and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Doctor Giuseppe Severini, a specialist urologist with years of experience, explains how surgery is carried out at Villalba.

What are the most common problems associated with the genitourinary tract?

In adults of both sexes the most common pathologies are urinary calculi and tumours in the kidneys or bladder. In men specifically, we deal with tumours in the prostate gland or testicles, as well as urination problems, obstruction of the bladder neck or the urethra.

How are these problems treated at Villalba?

Mainly employing keyhole surgery or endoscopy. In some cases we may use open surgery. It depends on the illness we are dealing with.

What technology do you use?

For the Kidneys we employ mini-invasive keyhole surgery, which only involves making small cuts in the skin that are no bigger than a thumb. Special instruments called trocars are inserted. One has a videocamera and this makes it possible to operate using the other trocars from the outside. With transurethral endoscopy, cystoscopy is employed for the resection of growths in the bladder and prostate, or using the latest endourological technology we can remove kidney or bladder stones without cutting the skin by employing laser ureteroscopy or alternatively by making a small incision in the side of the body, kidney stones can be resectioned by percutaneous “needle” access.

What are the advantages of these methods compared with traditional surgery?

There is reduced risk of surgical trauma and much less post-operative pain. Hospital stays are shorter (between only one and three days), and there is only minor scaring as well as a more speedy recovery. In general, the fact that there has been less surgical manipulation means that there are fewer risks of adhesion and blood loss especially for patients using anticoagulant treatments or with congenital coagulation disorders.
