The Roman Amphitheatre in Rimini was built in the second century AD near to the old city centre and is the only amphitheatre to survive in part in the whole Emilia-Romagna region. It could seat 12,000 people. There were two main entrances and many secondary entrances. Built in an oval shape on two levels with a portico of 60 arches. In the third century a new wall was built to defend the city against the barbarian invasions and incorporated the amphitheatre. During excavations in the 19th century part of the structure came to light again.
