Istria, a land rich in history, a home to diverse cultural traditions, a place where cultures meet and sometimes clash.

Istria - 30 March 2016 - Valentina Zerbini

Istria is a very particular peninsular. Most of its territory belongs to Croatia but a small area is part of Slovenia and an even smaller piece is part of Italian territory. This strange subdivision is the result of various occupations over the centuries. One of the most important events was the Peace of Rialto in the year 933 which allowed the Venetians to navigate along the rocky Istrian coastline. During this period different Italic and Slavic groups migrated into the territory.

In 1943 when the area was annexed into the Third Reich and after the war the area fell into Yugoslav hands and much of the ethnic Italian population abandoned Istria in what is called the “great exodus”.

Following the exodus the area was repopulated mainly by Croats and Slovenes along with groups from other Yugoslav nationalities.

Despite these political and geographical controversies Istria continues to attract many tourists. The  Adriatic Sea has cut into its rocky coastline creating thousands of creeks and islands which have become magnets for tourists and nature lovers.
