Romantic Flair

Who said that romanticism is out of date? Bridal fashion suggests quite the opposite. The new collections offer an idyllic chromatic range, from delicate shades of pink to the more ethnic gold as well as lavish cuts recalling Hollywood divas and princesses…the stuff that dreams are made of!

Milano - 26 April 2016 - Eleonora Ferrante

The elegant retro look of the new bridal collections take us back in time to the heyday of Italian haute couture. Rome, with its sunsets, ruins and basilicas in the period immediately after the Second World War, that saw actresses, princesses and First Ladies strolling between via Condotti and via Veneto attracted by the new high fashion. Take the Sartoria delle Sorelle Fontane whose garments for weddings and everyday life stood out for their romantic cuts with a touch of 19th century style. There has always been a strong connection between Italian haute couture and the nobility, those key players and muses for the newborn Italian style.

The link continues today. Just think, of Giorgio Armani’s recent creations for the wedding of Beatrice Borromeo and Pierre Casiraghi, precious as jewels, an ivory coloured wedding dress with a flared silhouette in Chantilly lace, while the evening dress for the reception recalled the muse of Art Nouveau, a white silk gown softly folding around the bride’s body with a soft pleated train and a deep neckline.

More romantic and poetic on the other hand is the pink, that iconic colour of femininity, which shyly emanates from the long tulle gowns in Carlo Pignatelli’s collections.

The new collections propose bridal gowns that do more than merely clothe the body, they reveal the whole personality of the wearer and the artist who has tailored them. A striking example is the Max Mara collection, aimed as ever at a young and sporting public, it offers a fairytale in a modern key, simple bon ton, unconventional and minimal but always refined.

Blumarine offers us an aristocratic bride with a jazz soul, like Gatsby’s Daisy, flaunting a timeless elegance. Different textured fabrics are crossed to give rise to a chromatic scale of whites, starting out from the transparency of tulle and chiffon passing by muslin and lace, before reaching Chantilly Lace embellished with romantic floral designs.

Colour brings out anything but timidity in the creations of Elisabetta Polignano. The combination of the white of flowers with nuances of grey and black are modern and elegant while the original use of gold conjures up the idea of an oriental Princess.
