The star attraction of the moment: Cern, in the suburbs of Geneva, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the most important
locations for scientific research in the world. Recently a new policy has meant that alongside the powerful experiments taking place with the particle accelerator, Cern in Geneva has also become a privileged destination of thousands of tourists who can be seen everyday waiting to enter.

Of course Italy is doing its part, not only from the point of view of sending visitors but also thanks to the work of Fabiola Gianotti, the soon-to-be head of the entire set-up. However there are also many visitors from other countries, from Russia and Eastern Europe as well as northern countries, Americans, British and visitors from Asia. The Swiss are particularly happy to welcome visitors from Russia and America especially because apart from Cern there is also another side of Geneva to be discovered: there are the stylish restaurants, elegant shopping streets and some of the most luxurious hotels to be found anywhere on the continent.

Geneva is a city with many faces. Its beautiful 140 metre high fountain, the narrow streets of the old town with the splendid cathedral of St Pierre, and then we have the lakeside, the swans, the gla-morous cocktail bars with incredible views across the water to the surrounding mountains. And you can’t forget to pay a visit to Rue du Rhone for the most exclusive world-famous brands of jewellery, clothes and watches.

But returning to the subject of Cern you should note that various guided tours can be enjoyed around the research Institute. Some are aimed at children and teenagers. It’s possible to organize individual visits or group tours up to a maximum of 24 people. Cern is an enormous structure with many fascinating locations, however perhaps the major attraction is its famous tunnel whose exterior wall can be seen by taking a lift underground in periods of the year when it is not active and not giving off dangerous radiation. There is also a special area of Cern where the tunnel comes to the surface and a special wall protects the health of those present in the area. This part of the complex can be visited at any time, as well as the control room in which dozens of scientists analyze data coming from the computers in front of your very eyes.
